Short term Memory loss (STM) which is also referred to amnesia is not a strange occurrence as everyone at one point of their life has experienced it. This is due to the fact that the brain cannot record immense volume of information thrown to it every day. Short term memory loss tend to retain only a small portion information at a time, as such occurrence or information shared 30 minutes ago, a person with STM loss can barely remember. They tend to remember things as it relates to their day-to-day activities only. Some of these symptoms include:
- Absent mindedness
- Extra forgetfulness Lo
- Tendency to forget new information quickly.
- Having trouble remembering or learning new things.
- Exerting pressure on the brain before you remember or contribute to conversation or discussion especially on things you once had idea on. For example always forgetting names of people or things, missing appointments due to forgetfulness among others.
Common causes of Short-Term Memory Loss(STM)
Stress, medical conditions, Fatigue, Medication, Age, hormone imbalance.
The diagnosis of short term memory loss should be taken to a doctor for proper examination, some of these measures can be taken to understand fully the cause. They include: Mini mental state examinations, brain scan and blood tests.
Causes of Short Term Memory
Formation of Aneurysm in the Brain:
The brain is receive blood through the arteries, and when some path of the arteries is blocked. It is said that aneurysm had occurred, and this alters the free flow of blood transportation blood to the brain, and this could lead to memory loss.
Brain Tumour
Abnormal growth in the brain could lead to energy depletion which causes the death of brain cells. This could result to short term memory loss.
Trauma
Trauma as a result of accident or assault most times could lead to short-term memory loss. This happens when the cerebral arteries is compressed and this in turn delays nerves transmission which could lead to complete forgetfulness.
Alcohol, and Drug Abuse
Excess intake of alcohol, and drug abuse has some sedative effects on our brains. This could lead to hallucinations and memory too.
Ageing
Ageing contribute to short term memory loss. As we become older in age the cells in our brain begin to wear out and eventually dies, and that brings about forgetfulness.
Treatment of Short Term Memory Loss.
Short term memory loss could be mild, and the best remedy would be reducing the lifestyle that lead to it in the first place. Some things could be introduced to help in speedy recovery such as:
- Reducing stress or anything that will promote stress.
- Giving the body the rest it needs, getting enough sleep each day.
- Engaging in exercise regularly.
- Find coping skills to help deal with memory loss such as using reminders(list making, alarms, etc) to help you remember tasks and appointments.
Complicated or serious memory loss should be taken to a doctor for proper examination and test, so it could be treated as quickly as possible.
