Its not an uncommon sight to see Africans depicted in encyclopedias and history books as gatherers moving from one safari land to another in search of food and in times of harsh weather, searching for a cave or a tree to take shelter.
As one of the cradles of human civilizations (great civilizations at that), The reality is that Africa depending on the purpose, the time, place and materials available at the time, have lived in houses built with sound architectural considerations.
Functionality, aesthetics, durability and most importantly for an African home, whether be it palacia or an humble abode, it is built with homeliness in mind.

1. Pyramids:
The pyramid of Zoser (Djoser) found in Egypt is considered the oldest pyramid in the world yet discovered. The pyramids in Egypt are a sight of marvel and a real work of art that still fascinates modern science.

The pyramid of Giza is one of the most popular.
2. Mud houses:
Mud houses though still common now in the rural villages of some African country were an innovative style of building at the time. especial in regions with harsh weather conditions like the deserts and rain Forests. Muds were used to build anything from pyramids to defence walls, houses, place of worship and palaces.

A very good example of the magnificence in their construction is still found in sub Saharan regions of Africa.
One of the most popular is the UNESCO recognized and protected Djenné town of Mali that goes back as far 250 B.C and its amazing mud structure lasting since the 15th century.
3. Rock cut building:

Most popular of these type of buildings or construction is the famous Bete Giyorgis and the Giant Stelae both in Ethiopia.
4. Ancient walls:

All over Africa, remains of walls built with either mud, stones or mud bricks as defence can still be found. One of the most preserved is the shona walls of Zimbabwe.
5. Bandiagara cliff:
This is one of the most impressive sites. Located in Mali, rising over 500 feet and over 100 kilometers lengthwise.

It serves as both abode and defence for the people of dongo who have manage to preserve this heritage.
