Fashion is a part of our everyday life that constantly evolves. It’s funny how some styles that were in vogue 300- 500 years ago reoccurred, while others were worn out in time.
I did some research and I’ve put together some things you didn’t know about fashion;
1. Who invented fashion & design?
In mid 19th century, ‘ House of worth ‘, was the first fashion design brand by the first fashion designer, Charles Frederick Worth. He was Britain though based in Paris.
In a time where styles made by dressmakers were gotten only from the royals, worth built his brand by picking styles for his customers instead of listening to their demands. He became a major game-changer in the fashion world.
2. History of fashion design – (When and Where?):
Fashion started when humans began wearing clothes (Wikipedia). Back in the day and now, there’s a lot of buzz in the fashion world. People spend so much money and effort on dressing up. There’s so much about fashion and its history to cover, let’s take a peek.
a. Roman Era ( 500BC-323AD):
People in this era dressed to show their wealth and class. The men wore a tunic with a toga(used to identify as a citizen) draped over it. The women wore a long dress(stola) and shawl(palla) on their heads.
b. Middle ages:
The colour of the cloth showed the difference between the rich and the poor. Here, the rich and poor, male and female wore tunics. A rich female dress came in layers, while the poor wore a shawl and an ankle-length tunic. A rich male went about in tunics completely shown while the poor went with their tunics unsewn from the borderline to waist.
c. Renaissance period (1350- 1520):
In this time frame, the type of clothes worn was used to denote the social status of the person wearing them. The first class was the aristocrats, they spent so much on their wardrobe, the 2nd class (middle class) were the traders and merchants, and then, the poor.
d. Fashion design between 1558-1900:
The royals in both France and Britain had a major role to play in fashion trends within this period. In 1760 textiles were manufactured in Britain. That was the dawn of the industrial revolution, though it is believed the evolution of fashion started in 1770. A sense of ease came when sewing machines were invented in 1790.
In the 20th century, though from mid 19th century, the Parisians ruled the fashion world. Charles Frederick Worth which we talked about earlier is said to be the evolution of ‘real’ fashion designing.
Fashion magazines also came into the scene and were a major tool to popularize new fashion styles.
Other things noteworthy that happened in this era including the effect of the war on fashion (the 1920s), the Wall Street crash (1930’s), ‘ready to wear’ became more popular and widespread from the 1940s, and many more.
In the 21st century, brands are selling better than designers. Though other countries are coming up fast, the most fashionable countries in the world for a long period of time are Britain, France, Italy, America, and Japan.
3. Fashion design categories:
There are two categories of fashion design; ready to wear and haute couture. We’ve seen the ready-to-wear became popular from the 1940s. Ready to wear or ‘already made’, as we call it in Nigeria (lol), is produced in large batches with standard sizes. The haute couture is custom made, i.e made for a particular individual’s size.
